Overall, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a pleasant surprise. On top of that, Talion's supernatural abilities allows a multitude of gameplay styles that can be customised by the player he can take a combat-based approach, sneak his way through places, and even use magic to recruit enemies to his own side! The combat system echoes the counter-heavy gameplay of the Batman and Assassin's Creed games, and the open world is jam-packed with content that goes above and beyond the campaign (and is arguably even more compelling than the story). Thankfully, Shadow of Mordor is packed with content, and doesn't lean on the Nemesis System to provide a compelling experience. It's a fantastic mechanic that really lends itself to multiple play-throughs by providing what feels like a limitless amount of variation and potential narrative paths.īut that's not all. In another instance, an enemy who was thrown into a fire by Talion may re-emerge again later in the story, and will seek revenge on the ranger who disfigured him. If he fails, then the captain will remember the attempt on his life, and will come back later with more ferocity. If he succeeds, then the orc squad is thrown into disarray, which can affect future conflicts by instigating a struggle for power within the enemy troops. There are the standard grunts that can be slain with ease but there are also particular foes that will actually remember your past indiscretions, and will react accordingly.įor example, there is one scene where Talion can sneak into an encampment, and assassinate a key captain. As you journey throughout the 40 hour campaign, Talion will encounter many key enemies who will alter the course of the story. You see, Shadow of Mordor is a game that remembers. It's with this newfound ghostly elvish power that sees Talion become the dark forces' worst nightmare whilst also allowing the possibility of the game's major hook the Nemesis System.

Thankfully, for the sake of value for money, things don't end there. Unfortunately, things don't go so well for him during the game's opening as he (and his wife and son) are ritually sacrificed by Sauron's forces.
